Episode 11 – Brain Connections
Vertical Connections: Integrating Thought
Processes Across Artistic Phases
Art is multidimensional. It flows not only across distinct phases — OPEN, CHANGE, and CLOSE— as explained in the previous blogposts, but also vertically, linking our inner emotional and rational processes. These vertical connections form a continuous thread throughout the creative journey, strengthening memory, emotional impact, and thoughtful engagement.
Vertical Connections in the Emotional Brain
The Emotional Brain is the heart of artistic transformation. It assigns meaning, builds bonds, and deepens our engagement with art.
From OPEN to CHANGE:
- Triggers ignite emotional bonding. A striking visual or bold element in artwork sparks immediate feeling.
- Recognition reinforces attachment. Artists and curators build on this by using narratives, rituals, and consistent themes to deepen the connection.
From CHANGE to CLOSE:
- Emotional experiences are consolidated. Repeated encounters and familiar patterns make the art memorable.
- Cultural rituals enhance impact. Activities like storytelling or thematic exhibitions transform initial impressions into lasting cultural relevance.
Example: A viewer first experiences a painting that captivates them with its vibrant color. Over time, repeated visits and curated storytelling help the viewer form a deeper, evolving emotional connection to the work.
Without emotional bonds, art loses its depth. These connections ensure that art resonates on a personal level and remains significant over time.
Vertical Connections in the Rational Brain
While the Emotional Brain builds attachment, the Rational Brain provides meaning and critical interpretation. It connects ideas logically and translates experience into understanding.
From OPEN to CHANGE:
- Triggers spark curiosity and reflection. Art challenges our perception, inviting us to explore new ideas.
- Structures and knowledge form. As we engage, our intellect builds frameworks that shape our understanding.
From CHANGE to CLOSE:
- New insights solidify into meaning. Through conscious engagement, curators refine narratives and tie new perspectives to previous knowledge.
- Ongoing rational analysis ensures lasting impact. Thoughtful interpretation helps audiences continuously rediscover and reinterpret art.
Example: An exhibition may begin with attention-grabbing visuals that spark curiosity. As visitors progress through the display, detailed explanations and context build a layered understanding, leading to a rich, sustained experience.
This rational feedback loop supports deep intellectual engagement, ensuring that art holds relevance long term.
Integrating Vertical and Horizontal Thought in Art
The overall creative process weaves both horizontal shifts (across the OPEN, CHANGE, and CLOSE phases) and vertical connections (linking primitive, emotional and rational dimensions) together. This integration is crucial:
- Emotional Triggers Anchor Memory: Without strong emotional input, artistic meaning lacks depth.
- Repetition Builds Cultural Attachment: Regular interaction with art reinforces its value through established patterns.
- Rational Interpretation Provides Lasting Meaning: Logical connections help art remain relevant and continuously engage audiences.
By understanding these vertical connections, artists and cultural professionals can enhance engagement, deepen interpretation, and build creative legacies that resonate both emotionally and intellectually.
Final Thoughts
Art evolves through the interplay of
instinctual impulse and thoughtful reflection. These vertical connections
ensure that every artistic moment—from the spark of inspiration to the final
execution—integrates memory, emotion, and reason into a cohesive creative
experience.
Where do you see these vertical connections in your own artistic practice? How do your emotional responses and rational insights work together to shape your creative journey? Let these questions guide you as you continue to explore the depths of your art.
